The gentle technique

First, what is Havening?

Havening Techniques® is a psychosensory approach it uses gentle, soothing touch alongside focused attention to calm the nervous system and settle the body’s response to stress.

Developed by the neuroscientist Dr Ronald Ruden and brought to the UK by Paul McKenna, it gently lowers the emotional intensity around difficult experiences, so they begin to lose their grip and calm can return.

You don’t have to relive anything. Sessions can be worked completely content-free, so change can happen without sharing painful details.

Your sessions

When you feel ready, we begin. Each session is gentle and unhurried, and follows a calm rhythm:

  • aWe settle into calm — helping your mind and body feel safe and grounded.
  • bYou learn self-Havening — simple, soothing techniques using your own hands.
  • cWe gently explore — at your pace, content-free if you prefer.
  • dYou leave with tools — a self-Havening guide to keep and use any time.

You stay in control the whole way through.

Yes! Very well. Because you use your own hands to carry out the techniques, Havening translates naturally to video. All you need is a quiet space and a steady connection.

Everyone is different, and we’ll talk through what feels right on your discovery call. Many people find two sessions a good place to begin, with a third available if it’s needed.

Yes. Havening is gentle and suitable for children and teenagers as well as adults. For under-18s, sessions are arranged with a parent or guardian.

That’s completely okay and entirely normal. The whole approach is built around helping you feel safe, and we only ever move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

No. Havening is a complementary wellbeing approach and isn’t a substitute for medical, psychiatric or psychological treatment. If you’re receiving care, it can sit alongside it and if you’re ever in crisis, please reach out to your GP, the Samaritans or emergency services.
